Ours vs. mine, or yours, or theirs. It applies to all of us. It is for all of us. It applies to laws that come from us. Land that belongs to all of us. Water that is for all of us. Forests that are for all of us. Software that is open to all of us.

With the rights associated with commons are associated responsibilities and prohibitions along with enforcement by all of us.

Elinor Ostrom and her peers did momentous research on the commons across the globe. They identified eight principles that are necessary (but not sufficient) for a commons to persist.

To create and maintain commons it will be necessary for every recrusion within a county watershed to participate in some way. For instance, in order for governmental agencies to be comfortable with such arrangements they need to know that the governance of commons will be handled responsibly--so that the governmental agencies are not blamed for failures or conflicts.
