Designing for Requisite Variety

**A proposal:** Never try to think about anything nor take any action without ensuring awareness (shared awareness) of three levels--the level of direct interest, the level that encompasses the level of focus, and thrdly the level that makes up the level of focus.

We need to organize Design Teams as networks, Design Networks, based upon available relevant variety (choices) and stop top down or bottom up design efforts. Of course the control (management) structure must mirror the design structure. I intend to adapt Stafford Beer's Syntegration to take care of neighborhood scale design in this way.

A graphic which illustrated a basic set of problem solving levels should be shared and adapted to the time and place and situation. See Geopolitical Recursions.

Parts of any problem should be parsed to the levels where there is the required capability. Coordination across levels will require adapting existing channels and inventing new communication channels and responsibilities.

This approach bears some resemblance to Dave Snowden's Cynefin approach to problem solving but my method does not parse it based on complexity (I assume all social problems are complex) but rather on capability--requisite variety in Ross Ashby's nomenclature.

See Geopolitical Recursions and click on some of the recursions (nodes in the graph). These subgraphics are illustrative, not accurate nor complete.

Individual Perspective bottom-up version of excess variety.

World Perspective top-down version of excess variety which risk being misleading.

Combined Perspective of Individual up and World down which may create more confusing.
